DEc Announces Record Breaking NYC & LI “CleanSweepNY” Collection

Nearly 220,000 Pounds of Pesticides and Chemicals Collected

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos announced today DEC held a record-breaking CleanSweepNY collection this July in Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk counties as part of a targeted initiative in DEC’s Long Island and New York City regions. CleanSweepNY events promote a healthy and sustainable New York by providing opportunities for proper disposal of unwanted and/or obsolete pesticides and other chemicals.

The Queens and Long Island CleanSweepNY event collected 191,512 pounds of pesticides and 28,319 pounds of other items such as paint and other chemicals. This collection event breaks the CleanSweepNY record set earlier this year (of 218,369 pounds) with the collection of a total of 219,869 pounds of pesticides and chemicals.

“CleanSweepNY helps keep unwanted pesticides and other chemicals out of our environment, communities, and municipal landfills.” Commissioner Seggos said. “DEC is pleased so many farmers, businesses, and institutions in the region are participating in this critical work to help build a toxic-free future for New York State.”

DEC established CleanSweepNY in 2002 with funds from several enforcement settlements through the agency’s Pesticides Management program to promote proper disposal practices of these potentially harmful chemicals. Since the program’s inception, CleanSweepNY collection events across New York State have captured more than three million pounds of chemicals.

The NYC and Long Island collection events were held at a New York City Parks facility in Queens and New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) facilities in Riverhead , and Melville.

CleanSweepNY services are provided to farmers and owners of former farms, all categories of NYS-certified pesticide applicators, cemeteries, golf courses, marinas, schools, landscapers and lawncare providers, nurseries, greenhouses, and other entities possessing unwanted or unusable pesticides and other waste chemicals.

DEC organized the events in collaboration with DOT and New York State Parks, which provided sites in the targeted DEC regions for the collection of these unwanted chemical materials. The program is supported by Cornell Cooperative Extension, the Agricultural Container Recycling Council, Soil and Water Conservation Districts, New York Farm Bureau, and other related grower associations.

Pesticide Application Requirements at Children’s Camps

A new amendment to the Public Health Law (PBH) prohibits pesticide applications to children’s day camps and overnight camps. The law also applies to playground, turf, athletic or playing fields utilized by camps that operate at college campuses, town-owned parks, or multi-use facilities while the camp is in session. This law went into effect on June 20, 2022. The products listed below are exempt from the prohibition but must only be applied by a DEC-Certified Pesticide Applicator or by someone who works under the supervision of a DEC-Certified Pesticide Applicator. All of the below products, with the exception of pesticides exempt from registration, must be registered for use in New York State. NPMA Impact Awards for Women in Pest Management

The NPMA Impact Awards for Women in Pest Management will honor and celebrate exceptional women at all levels within the pest management industry. NPMA is actively seeking nominations of women across the field, in any role, including management, technical/service, sales, or office. Recipients will be honored at NPMA ‘s Women’s Forum, May 3-5 in Nashville, TN.

Eligibility and Judging Criteria

Women working in any function at a pest control company are eligible for consideration. This includes technical/service, sales, management, or office staff. Nominations are open to individuals from around the globe from both NPMA member companies, as well as nonmembers.

All nominees will be reviewed based on the merits of the information provided below. We encourage nominations from anyone who has a professional relationship with a potential nominee, as well as nominations of individuals who have received state, local, or other industry-specific recognition.

Master Technician Certification Program

An ongoing education and accreditation
program to provide technicians with the
expertise needed to achieve a high level
of competence and professionalism. This
program will help provide the technician with
the tools needed to properly identify targeted
pests and to develop effective treatment plans
utilizing IPM Best Practices.

This program is open to those technicians
who have been in the pest control industry
for over three-years, meet proper licensing
criteria and are supported by their member
companies. Candidates will be required to
attend a set number of courses/meetings/
workshops within a two-year period and
demonstrate their ability and knowledge
by passing all exams, which includes a final exam.
